Trainer Nigel Blackiston remains confident that stable star Suavito can be competitive over 2000m; underlining a race like the 2016 Caulfield Stakes in October as a possible target for the mare during the forthcoming Spring Carnival.
Suavito has been a strong and consistent performer throughout her entire racing career to date but has displayed a clear affiliation with short course races, and is subsequently a two-time Group 1 winner over 1400m at Caulfield.
Confirming the Thorn Park mare would be given an opportunity to add to her Group 1 1400m tally in the Memsie Stakes this spring, Blackiston told RSN he still believes she is capable is performing over an increased distance.
“Possibly it was my over-adventurousness jumping into 2000m with only two runs under her belt, especially after a long layoff,” Blackiston said.
“I certainly put my hands up there that it was the wrong thing to do.
“I think she does see the 2000m.
“She won the Matriarch Stakes a couple of years ago at Flemington, so it’s quite a stiff 2000m.
“I’m not saying I won’t try it (2000m) again, but I think seven furlongs to a mile definitely is her best trip. But she does see a nice 2000m out in the right company.”
Suavito has posted eight wins and as many minors through her twenty-two career starts so far, and has undoubtedly continued to step up in class and ability with age.
Resuming in 2015 for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m), Suavito progressed to success in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) before finishing a credible seventh in less-than-ideal racing conditions in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
Kept away from racing during the 2015 Spring Carnival, Suavito continued her impressive first-up record when delivering a talent-rich field defeat in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) before finishing third in her defence of the Futurity Stakes.
Failing to figure when ninth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), Suavito has not been seen at the races since placing eleventh in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on Day 2 of The Championships.
