2015 Caulfield Stakes for Criterion

July 21st, 2015

Trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig have been thrilled with the results posted by Criterion in 2015 already, and have revealed the talented globetrotter will likely begin his Melbourne Spring Carnival campaign in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on October 10th.

Criterion capped an impressive Autumn Carnival campaign with a standout performance for success in the major Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Day 2 of The Championships, and has since travelled abroad for third in the Group 1 QEII Cup (2000m) in Hong Kong before a credible fifth in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (2011m) on June 17th.

Having been entered for the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes (2012m) at York in August, Dabernig told Racing Ahead all is going to plan with the classy son of Sebring and the team is confident of a successful run before returning for the 2015 Caulfield Stakes.

“He’s in terrific order and is really enjoying the European summer; he’s got a great coast on him,” Dabernig said.

“He’s on track to run there on the 19th of August and then he’ll be on his way home and we’ll look at something like a Caulfield Stakes into Cox Plate.

“He’s carrying a little more weight than he was through the autumn here, he’s put on weight so that’s a good sign and that gives us something to work with.

“He’ll naturally tighten-up now as his work increases into his race and you always like to have a little extra condition on them to handle the trip back over here.”

Posting six wins and a further eleven minors through 28 career starts so far, Criterion has been a standout performer since first appearing on course in late 2012, and was unlucky not to break through for a maiden win at the highest level during the 2013 Spring Carnival, highlighted by a close second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

Arguably finding career-best form to date during the 2014 Autumn Carnival, however, Criterion finished a close second to Shamus Award in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) early in his preparation before taking out each of the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m).
