Cheeky Descarado wins Caulfield Stakes 2011

October 10th, 2011

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Descarado confirmed his love of Caulfield by winning the 2011 Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) leading throughout.

The five-year-old confirmed he was back better than ever when he posted his first win since taking out the 2010 Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Jockey Nash Rawiller rated the son of High Chaparral to perfection getting opponets off the bit turning into the home straight.

The race result was full of surprises.

The favourite Lion Tamer settled back near last when expected to be midfield.

The pace of the race made his task almost impossible to win.

After making a move approaching the home turn he raised the white flag and along with Alcopop dropped out.

Lights Of Heaven chased hard but was being held while Midas Touch, who hit the running rail coming into the home straight, could find no more.

It was left to the bolter Avienus to produce a threatening run and at the 100m mark she looked like prevailing.

Rawiller and Descarado had something left and on the line held on to win  2011 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) comfortably.

The result was a triumph for Waterhouse  who now goes in search of that illusive 2011 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 22.

Luxbet have the gelding juicy odds at $15 behind new race favourite Helmet at $3.50 with Jimmy Choux $4.40.
